I get to mindset

One of the most powerful shifts we can make in our careers, and our lives in general, is changing our perspective from “I have to" to “I get to." It sounds simple, but this transformative mindset can create positive outcomes on how we show up at work, in our communities, and even in the job search.

The "I have to" mindset is couched in a burden. It creates a sense of obligation and pressure; while the "I get to" viewpoint begins with gratitude and opens us up to possibilities. Some examples on how to make the shift with just a few simple word replacements.

• I have to lead this projects. → I get to influence outcomes and build trust.
• I have to work at the food bank. → I get to show up for those in need in my community.
• I have to compete with the ATS and AI in my job search. → I get to take agency over my next career move and tell my story with intention.

Reframing these challenges changes us from the inside out, and gives us the mental clarity to show up with purpose and positivity. It reminds us that opportunity and responsibility often coexist, and when we approach tasks with a sense of privilege, our energy shifts. Over time, the results will change too.

The world is negative enough and we can't control every circumstance, but we can control our perspective, our presence, and the mindset we bring into each day. As someone once said to me: Change your stinkin' thinkin'!

Let's spread positivity and possibility this week.
