The power of the pivot
One thing I’ve learned in my career, and really just life in general, is that progress is rarely a straight line. Whether it’s work, school, or in relationships, detours are inevitable, but they aren’t failures. Rather, they are moments where the power of the pivot comes into play. And pivots are where the magic happens.
As a member of Gen X, reinvention is in my DNA. I grew up with rotary phones but now use my iPhone like a pro. Early in my career, I typed (and edited!) on a typewriter, and now I’m thankful for the mobility of a tablet. Later on, I navigated the workplace in a post-9/11 world where no one knew what would be next. I’ve lived through organizational restructures, recessions, and the dark days of COVID.
Reinvention is a powerful tool, and for me, it’s often been a way of life.
As a child of the military, I learned early how to start over: new schools, unfamiliar cities, different cultures. Fourteen schools later, I learned not only how to reinvent but reintroduce myself time and time again. I understood the importance of building connection and adapting efficiently without losing myself. Those early lessons shaped the communicator and leader I am today; someone who rebuilds community, amplifies voices, and inspires change in both my personal and professional life.
Right now I am tapping into all of those past learnings as I stand at the helm of what’s next. This pivot has afforded me the opportunity to help elevate the brand of a veteran-owned consulting organization. I’m supporting small businesses in strengthening their presence online. And most importantly, I’m reconnecting to what truly fills my cup. It’s not about money or status. It’s about using my gifts to help others.
So, if you’re like me and in a period of transition, lean in. You’re not starting over; you’re starting from experience.
✨ Everything you’ve done is preparing you for what you’re going to do.
✨ Your instincts are sharp.
✨ You are resilient.
And no matter what generation you belong to, you got this. I’m cheering you on!
