Belonging is the real culture strategy
Belonging is a powerful and necessary tool in the workplace. When people feel seen, valued, and included, they contribute and thrive. Yet, somewhere along the way, conversations about DEI shifted from being celebrated to being sensitive. The truth is simple: DEI isn’t a buzzword. It’s important. It’s necessary. It’s human.
Belonging isn’t about being part of a “work family.” Let’s be honest, you can’t make your family redundant. So, a professional team does not a family make. Belonging is about respect, consideration, and attempting to view a perspective different from your own. It’s built in the everyday moments where people feel safe enough to show up as themselves without ridicule or passive aggressive sarcasm. Belonging is about presence and inclusion.
As a Black woman, this resonates deeply. Belonging is something I live and advocate for daily. It looks like walking into rooms where I’m the only one who looks like me and still choosing to show up authentically and contribute fully. Sometimes it’s navigating spaces where my voice has to work twice as hard to be heard. That’s the hard part. But the other side is the great relief, empowerment, and confidence that comes when my leaders cultivate environments where I don’t have to shrink and over-explain the value I bring.
When leaders create cultures of belonging, they unlock the full potential of the individuals on their teams. People do their best work when they feel respected, supported, and recognized. Belonging starts with leaders who understand inclusion is the foundation to success.
And the most successful workplaces ensure people are elevated, compensated, and celebrated.
